Niobrara National Scenic River For Kids
Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge has a Junior Ranger program ($1.00 fee) Upon completion of the program kids receive a badge, have their photo taken, a newsletter and a 15% discount on book store items. The Niobrara Council sponsors day camps for elementary aged children in the summer. Contact them at (402) 376-2793.
Maine ocean islands provide the only nesting sites for Atlantic puffins in the United States. Eastern Egg Rock in the midcoast region, Seal Island and Matinicus Rock at the mouth of Penobscot Bay, and Machias Seal Island and Petit Manan Island off the downeast coast provide habitat for more than 4,000 puffins each summer.
