The winter weather in Utah's Wasatch Mountains can turn from bearable to frigid in the blink of an eye, so we never hit the skin track without an insulated jacket in our packs. Part of Backcountry's touring collection, the Women's Murdock 850 Down Jacket was designed with input from Gearheads to create a warm, fully-featured, and impressively packable down jacket. Boasting a high fill rating, the lofty down insulation efficiently locks in body heat without adding bulk and easily compresses to a size that fits well in any pack, keeping us comfortable during sub-zero dawn patrols, gusty transitions on the summit of Murdock Peak, and frigid descents into untouched cold smoke. We designed the Murdock to seamlessly layer under the Backcountry x Flylow Pfiefferhorn Jacket, but made it durable and weather-resistant enough to be worn as a standalone when it's flurrying on the skin track. Its rip-stop outer material can withstand snags from those early-season shrubs that haven't yet been completely covered by snow, and is down-proof to prevent any stray feathers from escaping. Water-resistant zippers keep moisture from permeating into our layers, while the adjustable hood, cuffs, and hem create a barrier that no chilly air can bypass. Unlike most down jackets, the Murdock actually features zippered side vents so we can easily flush heat, preventing a sweaty chill. All the zipper pulls and adjustment tabs are glove-friendly, and a plethora of pockets complete this toasty package. Two fleece-lined hand pockets and a chest pocket keep our essentials close at hand, while an internal medial pocket and large mesh pocket accommodate other items like a phone and goggles.

Maine ocean islands provide the only nesting sites for Atlantic puffins in the United States. Eastern Egg Rock in the midcoast region, Seal Island and Matinicus Rock at the mouth of Penobscot Bay, and Machias Seal Island and Petit Manan Island off the downeast coast provide habitat for more than 4,000 puffins each summer.
